Frank Lloyd Wright Mercedes Benz 300S Sedan & 300SL Gullwing
...Vintage Mercedes Coolness...
Frank Lloyd Wright
Mercedes Benz 300S Sedan & 300SL Gullwing
Frank Lloyd Wright is considered by many to be the greatest architect of the 20th Century, and he is pictured below standing in front of one the homes he designed, and he has is standing in front of his Mercedes 300S Sedan, which kind of looks like a Rolls Royce, and Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing.
The Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing is considered to be one of the most classic, iconic and collectable cars ever made. Frank Lloyd Wright also designed the Manhattan Mercedes Benz dealership located at 430 Park Avenue in New York City in the 1950s for Max Hoffman, who was a car importer.
Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous piece of residential architecture was likely "Falling Water" which is a residential home built on top of a natural waterfall, which is pictured below.

Auto Express Video Review of S-Class Coupe
The video above offers a super-detailed review of the all-new S63 Coupe, and in photos below we see what the car looks like with the opaque sunroof panel both in place, and also rolled up out of the way. Just to be crystal clear, this sunroof does not open up, and it offers an opaque window shade that slides back out of view to make the coupe seem much more like a convertible. This makes this open-air coupe feel even more like a convertible, and in my opinion, it is dramatic how different it looks with the shade in place, and well as when it is removed.

Mercedes-Benz made the 300D from November of 1951 through March of 1962, and they made 11,430 examples of the model in that timeframe. The Mercedes-Benz 300 was designed for the America market, and at the time, it retailed for the cost of 3 Cadillacs.

The photo below shows a 1961 Mercedes-Benz 280SE open-air Coupe (W111). It is fascinating to contextualize this image by considering that JFK was the president when this photo was taken.
The photo below shows the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, which is the great-grandson of the 280SE.

1960 Mercedes 190SL
"Why do I love sports cars? Because–don't laugh–the thrill of skimming along in a low-slung speeder represents an important approach to life. A Great many philosophers have said that the significance is the journey, not the destination–and sports car enthusiasts like going places, not getting places. My red Mercedes seems to sum it up perfectly." –Paul Newman 1960

2015 Mercedes S-Class Coupe
...All New Model Introduction...
2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe
Mercedes recently showcased photos of the upcoming all-new S-Class Coupe, and it is really, really impressive looking!!! The new S-Class Coupe is based upon the S-Class sedan, and shares many of its features, including having only LED lights, and it comes standard with four-wheel-drive.
I remember when I was 16 years old, back in the early eighties totally tripping on the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC. I remember at the time thinking the ultimate cars were the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, the BMW 635csi, and the Mercedes-Benz 500SEC. In retrospect, the model that has endured the most since that time would likely be the 500SEC Open Air Coupe.
The photo above shows the Mercedes-Benz 500SEC from the early 1980s, and in the photos above and below we see its new-born grandson, the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, which is a very serious piece of automotive engineering.
I remember how badly I wanted a 500SEC, but I never got one. I remember thinking at the time that the 500SEC was the ultimate cool car, because it looked so modern, yet timeless, and masculine, and when you opened the sunroof and rolled down all four side windows, you experienced a car that in many ways felt like a convertible with the top down, but with the protection and stability of the C Pillar.

American Gigolo with Richard Gere 1980
What The American Gigolo Mercedes SL Model Looks Like Today
Just for frame of reference, I was thinking what the modern version of Richard Gere's Mercedes-Benz SL would look like today, and it would be the 500SL (R231). This model has matte black paint, and is a great looking car!
The fact the opening lines from the trailer are not in the movie made me curious, so I investigated and discovered the opening scene in the original movie scripts, which was written by Paul Schrader begins differently with:
INT. COCKTAIL LOUNGE -- NIGHT FADE IN:
Pre-credits. We only see his face, speaking through the shadows. He brushes his index finger lightly across his lips as he speaks. He knows: his lips are his most sexual organ.
JULIAN
You know who I am. I know who you are. We have no secrets. I know what you're thinking. You know what I'm thinking. We have our own methods of communication. You don't have to say anything. I can read your thoughts. I know what you need. You're afraid. You're afraid of your husband. You're afraid of yourself. You're afraid of your own sexuality. You're afraid to ask for what you need. You're afraid of being hurt.
Julian sits in a dimly lit booth with a middle-aged woman. His eyes are only on her. His crème brûlée is untouched. The woman nervously sips her coffee as he spins his web.
There's no reason to be afraid. I don't know why you're afraid. I don't even know why we're sitting here. Why we're wasting time eating things we don't want to eat, doing things we don't want to do, talking in front of people who don't matter. It's so simple. You know who I am. You want to be here. You want to be with me. You know what I can do. I can make you relax, relax like you've never relaxed before. Make you aroused like you've never been aroused before. Excited. I know how to touch you. Where to touch you. How to kiss you. Where to kiss you . . .
CUT TO:
End pre-credits.
The final American Gigolo movie omitted the above scene completely. Instead it began with the opening credits, which is interesting. Perhaps the editors thought it was better without it. Hmmmn?!?!? When I was doing research, I ran into a fascinating article that goes into depth on analyzing American Gigolo while offering different reviewers opinions of the movie from when it was originally released in 1980.

The following Mercedes-Benz 450SL ad is from 1980, and it offers a fascinating context for understanding Mercedes-Benz's perspective on the value proposition at the time.

Mercedes-Benz C111 Research Vehicle
Mercedes-Benz experimented with the C111 in the 1960s and 1970s. Mercedes made the first C111 in 1969, as seen below, and it incorporated a fiberglass body. Mercedes made C111 models up until 1979.
